Tax Changes for 2025

The tax landscape has shifted with adjusted brackets and standard deductions for tax season 2025. According to the IRS:

For single taxpayers and married individuals filing separately, the standard deduction rises to $14,600 for 2024; and for heads of households, the standard deduction will be $21,900 for tax year 2024.”

Retirement contribution limits have increased, and there are enhanced credits for energy efficiency improvements.

      • The maximum credit for qualified energy-efficient improvements you can claim each year is:
          • $1,200 for energy-efficient property costs and specific energy-efficient home improvements, with limits on exterior doors ($250 per door and $500 total), exterior windows and skylights ($600), and home energy audits ($150).

To organize your tax documents and streamline the filing process, start with three digital folders: IncomeDeductions, and Credits.

      • Your income folder should house those W-2s, 1099s, and investment statements.
      • Gather mortgage statements, property tax receipts, and charitable giving records for deductions.
      • Document any credits you qualify for, like child care expenses or energy-efficient home improvements, in the Credits folder.

Key Dates and Deadlines for Tax Season 2025

First, mark April 15th on your calendar as the due date for tax returns. But don’t wait until then to start. Most employers must send W-2s by January 31st, making early February the perfect time to begin organizing and gathering tax information. Filing taxes early means you’ll receive your refund sooner if you are owed one.

In addition, filing taxes before the deadline doesn’t mean you need to pay immediately; you can still wait until the tax payment deadline. Filing early clarifies how much you owe and gives you more time to budget for the payment.

Lastly, avoid the stress of a looming tax deadline by filing early. Being on top of the tax filing process will allow you ample time to gather your tax documents, ask any necessary questions, and address any errors before your taxes are due.

A Daily Money Manager’s Perspective on Taxes

In my years of helping clients navigate tax season, I’ve learned that early organization prevents last-minute stress.

Start reviewing last year’s return now – it’s your roadmap for this year’s documents. That way, you won’t have to recreate your process for filing taxes and can use your previous tax year documents to guide your tax filing for this year.

Bonus tip: Create a consistent digital filing system, such as “2024_W2_Employer,” to make it easy to find your tax documents year after year.

Tax Season 2025 and Looking Ahead

While organizing this year’s documents, create a 2025 tax season folder (2024 year taxes). Adding documentation throughout the year beats the February scramble and will keep you organized for filing your taxes in 2026.
